Pilgriamages > Hindu Religious > Maheshwar

Maheshwar was revived from obscurity by the Holkar Queen, Rani Ahilyabai of Indore, in the late 18th century and was formerly known as Mahishmati. Most temples and the forts of this riverside town date back to about the same time. Principal sights include the fort which is now a museum displaying heirlooms and relics of the Holkar dynasty, the three ghats lining the banks of Narmada river, and many tiered temples distinguished by their overwhelming balconies and intricately worked doorways. Maheshwar is known for unique weave and beautifully complex patterns of the sarees throughout the country.
