Pilgriamages > Hindu Religious > Puri

The seaside resort of Puri, 60km from Bhubaneswar, is one of the four dhams (holiest Hindu pilgrimage places in India). Religious life in the city revolves around the great Jagannath Temple and its famous Rath Yatra, or Car Festival.

This coastal town of Orissa is considered to be the abode of Lord Jagannath (Lord of the world) by Hindus -hence the name, Jagannath Puri. It is one of the four 'Dhams' (holiest pilgrim centres). It is located on the shoreline of the Bay of Bengal and is just 60 kms from Bhubaneshwar.

Tracing back to the past, Puri was once a thickly wooded hill inhabited by the Sabaras. The city is blessed with Golden sand beaches for which it has been famous all over the world. Though life here revolves around the Jagannath Temple, the place has been attracting tourists who love to swim in the sea and laze around on its golden sands.

The beaches of Puri show divergent colours - calmness gives peace to mind while the crashing breakers reminds of the turbulent life within this calmness. The sunrays falling on seawater give an illusion of a rainbow on water surface. This pilgrimage town is also the home of artisans and craftsmen who produce a wide range of unique handicrafts.
