Pilgriamages > Buddhist Religious > Tabo

Situated at a height of 3050 metres in the magnificently isolated Spiti valley of Himachal Pradesh is this pilgrim place Tabo founded in 996 AD by the great scholar, Rinchen Zangpo, as an institution for advanced learning. Tabo celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 1996. Tabo stands on barren, flat ground and is built with mud brick which is very unlike most other monasteries in the Western Himalayas. A small community of sixty monks resides here.

Even today, bad weather permits trekking for only a limited period in the year. However, the small town is rapidly being modernised with electric lights and paved streets. The local shops stock basic provision for trekkers. Seasonal access by road to Manali and to Simla via National Highway 22 and State Highway 30 is possible. A bus journey from Kaza, the headquarters of Spiti district, to Simla, takes two days and to Manali, 12 hours. Tabo is 33 kms, and a slow 2hrs. drive by bus form Kaza.

Accommodation:
There's a Rest House and a few rooms at the monastery.
